OpenGL it was designed to be readily extensible to accomodate new hardware innovations.
Now you have new extensions:

1. GL_EXT_import_sync_object
2. WGL_EXT_swap_control_tear

Let us hope that we will have such news of OpenGL.
Unfortunately I have not yet found any reference about them.
